This Valentine’s Day, Show Love to Your PC

By: Vince Benanati

#ThrowbackThursday to the days when we would turn on our computer and it would function at top speed! We all sure miss when we first purchased a new PC with barely any programs on it and everything we want to do and search for was faster than ever experienced! We were in love with new technology! And then after a few months, or years, of usage those butterflies started to fade away with the computer starting to bog down in some type of way.

This Valentine’s Day, it’s time to show love to your PC and spark that love for technology back up!

Here are 4 easy tips on how to improve your computer’s performance:

*Most tips directed for Windows' Users

Disk cleanup: This tool deletes unnecessary or temporary files on your hard disk so you can increase the amount of storage space you have. Simply search Disk Cleanup from the Startup button and let it run!

Add Memory: Requires a little tech-savvy knowledge on your part but surprisingly cheap! By adding more memory, or RAM, it will increase the speed of your PC. Crucial.com’s free tool can help you find what type and how much memory your computer requires.

Erase files: Stop hoarding all those unnecessary files/programs from that college project you actually will never look at again. If you really want to keep them, then buy an external hard drive and start archiving everything over to that! Uninstall all the software you don’t use on a regular basis anymore. There are a few apps available to help get rid of junk hiding from open view. My favorite, MalwareBytes, is free and easy to use!

Startup items: Does your whole pot of coffee brew faster than the time it takes for your PC to boot up? This could have to do with the startup items sucking up your computer’s resources. For Windows users, this task may also require some tech-savvy knowledge. In the search bar of the Windows’ start menu, type “msconfig” and open up the program. A window called “System Configuration” will appear. Navigate to the Startup tab and take a look at the items listed. Be careful what you uncheck! But, if you recognize items that you know you don’t need starting up when you boot your PC, then uncheck them and click apply. Examples of such items could be client’s VPNs and conferencing software.

If you really want to improve the performance of your PC, then take a little time out of your day and show love to your PC and in return, it may catch you a break on the next reboot!
