What Your ERP Implementation Can Learn from the Dog Days of Summer

By: Katie Foley

Here in the Northeast we are entering those “dog days of summer”- those hot, humid days that roll around in late July and August. For many those dog days mean quieter periods at work and the perfect chance to sneak away on a summer vacation.

Much like the long, lazy days of summer, your ERP project can get major benefits from a more leisurely and relaxed approach. Here are the top three reasons why those “dog days of ERP” might be just what your ERP implementation project needed:

  1. The time to develop a thoughtful implementation plan. A successful implementation begins with carefully defining your manufacturing company’s business processes going forward and developing a strong implementation plan. The slower pace of the summer gives ERP project leaders the time they need to dedicate to those tasks.
  2. A break from the hustle and bustle of the normal work week. It seems like there’s never a good time for an ERP implementation project, because on top of making the implementation project a priority, you must also keep up with your normal day-to-day responsibilities. However, the lull in activity many businesses experience in the summer may actually be the perfect time to keep your ERP implementation moving along.
  3. A fresh perspective. You’re going through the implementation process and there’s a hang-up. Take the time away from the office to relax and unwind and come back with a fresh set of eyes and a new perspective. Maybe looking at the same problem with a fresh perspective will give you the clarity you need to solve the problem or overcome a challenge.

Sure your ERP project may pick up some steam when the chilly fall days come back and the full ERP project team is back in the office, but remember giving an ERP implementation the time, thought, and planning it deserves will make for a better result in the end.
